Return of the Sea Priestess

Hello and happy new year! So I guess this is where I explain to you what this is all about. I used to have a blog called The Sea Priestess, active from August 2002 until February 2010. I've had a few different blogs over the years, and at some points I am more comfortable with sharing my thoughts than at other points in my life. So why have I resurrected The Sea Priestess?

You may or may not be aware that The Sea Priestess is the title of a very influential novel by Dion Fortune. Under the guise of fiction, The Sea Priestess is in fact a teaching novel, with very clear accounts of practical rituals. As Dion Fortune herself admitted, "The 'Mystical Qabalah' gives the theory but the novels give the practice. ... those who study both get the keys of the Temple put into their hands." The mystic power of the sea is evoked in this novel and pervades the whole story. Some regard this as not only Dion Fortune's best novel, but the best occult novel ever written.

I used to frequent an online message board called The Sea Priestess, inspired by Dion Fortune's novel. This led me to adopt the title Sea Priestess as a screen name on MSN message boards. I ran a very popular online group for several years, until MSN decided to do away with message boards. Then I discovered that people were discussing their beliefs on youtube. Wow, what an exciting new way to interact with people! As I signed up and made my first youtube account, I wanted to use "priestess" as part of my username, but a little fear crept in and I typed "princess" instead. I was worried because I knew that my new housemates would be watching, and I wasn't sure how they might react. It has always been difficult to gather the courage to make videos about my beliefs. It is particulary difficult when I'm around new people, and I worry whether they will accept me.

Now that I am feeling more settled, I want to share my seaside path with you, through this blog and my youtube channel. What I want most of all is to feel a part of a supportive community, where we feel free to express our beliefs and share our practices. I know there are many out there who have a similar path to my own and it's fantastic to find something in common with people, as well as to compare our differences. I hope this blog can be an inspiration for you in contemplating your own path. Thank you for joining me here.

The Dorset Ooser

A massive wooden head with snapping jaw mechanism, real horns and hair. Photo from 1883-1891.  The Dorset Ooser has possible connections to the horned costumes sometimes worn by participants in English Mummers plays. The etymology of Ooser is also disputed, with various possibilities available, but I think it's most likely the same as the Oss, a snapping skull paraded around during midwinter. The pronunciation is very similar, and it's simply a way of saying "horse" without pronouncing the h. These teeth-gnashing heads are also known as 'obby 'oss or hobby horse.  One use of the Dorset Ooser was to strike fear into villagers who were perceived as shameful. Usually the target was an unruly wife who had disobeyed her husband by raising her voice, scolding him, beating him, or cheating on him. A woman who was perceived as a bad wife was forced to ride backwards on a donkey or horse while the angry Ooser snapped his jaw at her and a crowd of villagers beat their...

A Coven of Witches

Last year I posted an advert on witchvox calling for local people who would be interested in starting a new coven. Interest has been slowly and steadily growing. I currently have a potential coven of 10 ladies. I'm excited in a nervous kind of way. I am not the most socially confident person. The thought of meeting strangers is quite terrifying. I don't know how many of the potential witches are really up for trying this. I always assume that out of all who express an interest, only half will follow through. Since last year I had a good feeling about May, that this would be the time for new projects. I've proposed a coven meeting in May and so far three individuals have said they would like to meet up. What I worry about is being able to meet everyone's needs, because I want the coven to work for everyone. I want clear communication, this is the most important thing, that we are able to share our ideas. I don't like the idea of a coven where a select leadership...

Partial Eclipse Full Moon in Pisces

The partial lunar eclipse happened when the moon was low in the sky, and there was a fair amount of cloud here. But after the eclipse, the clouds cleared and the moon rose over the rooftops. I had a bonfire lit and locally picked herbs to burn. Key words for this full moon were: - Compassion - Vulnerability - Imagination - Sensitivity - Avoidance - Procrastination  Questions and Considerations: The power of imagination and intuition. How can we follow our hearts and live a compassionate lifestyle? This is a time of great sensitivity toward the emotions of others, and a yearning to give comfort to anyone who needs it. This willingness to help can grow to feel like a great burden. This can lead a sensitive person to hide away from the world because they feel overwhelmed by the work that needs to be done. In this case, we really need to take care of ourselves, to become emotionally stable and focused on practical goals. The key is to find some small way that you can use your beautiful...
